Patrick Mahomes' approach to emulate Tom Brady includes picking on his back

Jun 06, 2023

Patrick Mahomes has a new back-up quarterback who used to be Tom Brady's back-up quite recently

Some of the best athletes in history from younger generations have made sure to pick on the brains of legends of their respective sports. Patrick Mahomes is doing his own version of this after the Kansas City Chiefs decided to sign Blaine Gabbert as his back-up back in April. The 12-year veteran was Tom Brady's back-up from 2019 until he retired, now he gets to be Patrick Mahomes' back-up at the Chiefs. Upon arrival to the Kansas City Chiefs, Gabbert aims to become a great source of advice for the one player who actually has a chance to someday emulate what Tom Brady did. Mahomes is still young and truly has a chance to at least win a few more rings in his career.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Patrick Mahomes was asked about Blaine Gabbert's arrival. He said: "Yeah, I mean first off I knew of Blaine (Gabbert) from (former Chiefs QB) Chad (Henne) with them playing in Jacksonville together and Chad spoke very highly of him. And then since he's been in the building, he's been a true pro and he's came in. You see the talent (and) you see why he was a top 10 draft pick or a first-round draft pick and the arm strength there and things like that. And he was just backing up Tom (Brady) so I'm asking for any advice he can give me because if you're learning from that guy, you're learning from the right guy. So, (he's) just another good quarterback (and) good guy that can be in that quarterback room."

The one name that comes to mind who did apply similar tactics in order to become an even greater athlete is Mike Tyson. He never missed a chance to have conversations with other legends such as Muhammad Ali when the boxing icon still lived. Another good example is Jon Jones, who agreed to do a significant part of his camp with one of the UFC's greatest fighters in Henry Cejudo. This approach isn't new, Kobe Bryant also didn't miss the chance to ask Michael Jordan for pointers. If Mahomes wants to get near Brady, he has to try everything at his disposal.
